VIDEO TAPE INVOICING PROGRAM README FILE
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Video Tape Invoicing Program
Copyright (C) 1985-1991 by Danny A. Stewart,

ABOUT VTI:
Video Tape Invoicing is a program for video rental stores. It
keeps track of tapes to and from customers, does the invoicing of
items you sell, keeps a waiting list of customers who want to
rent movies, prints mailing lists, and helps you make buying and
selling decisions. VTI needs a DOS-based computer with 640k RAM
and a hard disk drive.
TO INSTALL VTI ON YOUR COMPUTER:
The diskette should have a file named INSTALL.BAT, which makes
two directories on your hard disk drive (VTI and VTITUT) and
installs the proper files in each. To run the INSTALL routine,
type:
A:INSTALL A: C:
where A: is your floppy disk drive and C: is your hard disk
drive. The INSTALL routine can install from any disk(ette) drive
or directory.
Part of the installation routine shows you the contents of your
computer's CONFIG.SYS file. If you change CONFIG.SYS, reset the
computer before loading VTI.
TO GET THE PROGRAM DOCUMENTATION:
The manual is in the file named MANUAL.TXT, which the INSTALL
routine places in the \VTITUT directory. To print it to your
printer, type a command similar to:
COPY C:\VTITUT\MANUAL.TXT PRN:
The manual is about 100 pages, including "Table of Contents" and
"Index." It is designed to print 10 cpi at six lines per inch on
8-1/2" x 11" paper with 1" margins (except for a 1-1/2" left
margin).
STARTING VTI:
The INSTALL routine adds two batch files, VTI.BAT and VTITUT.BAT,
to the root directory of your hard disk drive. At the C> prompt,
type VTITUT to load the tutorial program (which contains a few

sample tapes, customers, and authorized users). When you are
ready to begin actual data entry, type VTI to load the program.
When VTI loads, it displays a message which urges you to register
the program. However, VTI never limits its capacity.
The first time you run VTI, the program goes through an "update"
routine to check the file structure, to sure all files are
available, and to create the correct indices.
NOTES FROM THE AUTHOR:
A few years ago, I tried to find a computer program for my
business. The inexpensive programs didn't do what my store
needed and the programs which did what I needed were priced in
the thousands of dollars. I couldn't afford to pay the big bucks
and I couldn't afford to not have my store using a computer.
I spent $300 for one program, only to find it did the things the
author said, but not the way I wanted. Those "options" were
another $75 and didn't work right either.
I gave up and wrote my own program. The persons who saw it
encouraged me to put VTI on the market for other stores to use.
I vowed that no store would ever get "taken" as I did.
Therefore, here is my program.
Please install VTI in your store. If you like it, put it into
actual use. The program will remind you to register the program.
When you register, I'll send you a code which makes that reminder
message go away. If you don't like VTI, please drop me a note to
say why.
When you register VTI, you may request updates when you want
them. The update fee is typically $25.00 to registered stores.
When customers ask for a feature that I can incorporate into the
program to benefit many customers, I usually do it. So, please
write with your suggestions.
HOW VTI IS DISTRIBUTED:
VTI is distributed by shareware. Feel free to make copies of the
original distribution files and share them. If you like the VTI
program and continue to use it, send the registration fee to the
author.

FILES ON DISTRIBUTION DISKETTE(S):
When VTI is distributed on high-capacity diskettes and on most
bulletin boards, the files COPYVTI.EXE, INSTALL.BAT, and
README.VTI should be available.
When VTI is distributed on 360k diskettes, one diskette contains
VTIUPDAT.EXE, README.VTI and INSTALL.BAT, while the second
diskette contains at least VTIDOCS.EXE
If you did not obtain the correct set of files, contact your
dealer, distributor, or the author. The COPYVTI.EXE,
VTIUPDAT.EXE and VTIDOCS.EXE files are self-extracting files
using PKZIP under license from PKWARE, Inc.
PROGRAM INSTALLATION NOTES:
The CONFIG.SYS file must contain lines similar to FILES=20 and
BUFFERS=20. VTI.BAT and VTITUT.BAT are created by the INSTALL
routine. You may delete the README.VTI, MANUAL.TXT, *.ZIP and
PKUNZIP.EXE files from the hard disk drive when you complete
installation.
ERROR MESSAGES COMMON TO FIRST-TIME INSTALLATIONS
"Not enough memory" (before VTI displays any of its messages) --
VTI is reporting a lack of available memory on the computer
(640k needed). Remove memory-resident programs or alter the
SET CLIPPER=V016;R016 by reducing the R value (R016).
"Not enough memory" (after the program loads and displays at
least one of its messages or screens). Check the SET CLIPPER
line, and increase the "V" value to at least 16.
"Snow" on the screen -- add ;S1 at the end of the "SET CLIPPER"
line.
"open error proc USEIT c:\vti\reninven.dbf (4)" (or similar
message appearing on the top line of the screen). If the
number is 4 or more, check the FILES=20 line in the
CONFIG.SYS file. If the number is 0, try FCBS=10,5 or
STACKS=32,128 in the CONFIG.SYS file (to help expanded
memory, disk caches, etc.). If the number is 1, 2, or 3,
one of the DBF files may be lost or damaged. If the file
name ends with .NTX, do an option 9-1 Reindex <A>ll files
from the "Master Menu."
Happy computing. I hope you enjoy VTI.
